Tie up your running shoes and help fight cancer at the Poole Festival of Running

Poole Hospital Charity is delighted to have been chosen as the nominated charity for the festival and is raising money for cancer treatment at the hospital.

This year we are asking you to get involved, get sponsored and raise money for equipment to improve diagnostic methods and treatment delivery across the Dorset Breast Screening Unit and Radiotherapy. This will mean more accurate results and less stress for patients.

We are hoping to buy:

  • A lateral arm attachment for the biopsy machine in the Dorset Breast Screening Unit. £10,000 –To help the biopsy team reach trickier areas of the breast with ease.

  • Immobilisation devices for Radiotherapy. £15,000- Physical supports for specific areas of the body which help keep patients still in a certain position allowing the treatment rays to enter the body at very precise points to destroy cancer cells whilst avoiding unnecessary radiation to the nearby healthy cells.

Incredibly, if every adult participant raised just £12 we could purchase the Lateral arm and two immobilisation boards: the Eagle board to keep the head and neck still and a Prostep to keep the legs and pelvis still.

How to get involved:

Poole Hospital Charity’s 5K Run for Cancer takes place on Saturday 2 June. If you can challenge your self to run 5K and raise money for us then please sign up here.

The Half Marathon  on  Sunday 3 June is a new event for the festival. It is sold out but the charity has a limited number of places still available for the event. Each place costs £30 but this will be refunded if you raise £100 in sponsorship for the charity.  This is a brand new event for the town and the local authorities have asked us to limit numbers and time, so for this year there is a 400 person limit and a cut off time of 2 hours 30 minutes.  Email sophie.lawson@poole.nhs.uk to sign up.

Minithon Races on Sunday 3 June is the perfect way to get your little (and not so little) ones running, help your hospital and be in for the chance of winning £150 vouchers for your school to spend on sports equipment. Every finisher will receive a medal and trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category.

Races start from 11.45:

6/7 year olds (1 mile)

8/9 year olds (1 mile)

10/11 year olds  (1 mile)

12/14 year olds (1.5miles)

Sign up  here.

To enter the competition, schools will need to submit a list of participant names to sophie.lawson@poole.nhs.uk before May 31 2018. So don’t forget to tell your school that you’ve entered!

All runners who raise at least £50 for the charity will receive a complimentary Poole Hospital Charity t-shirt. If you raise more than £100, you will receive a Poole Hospital Charity running vest.
